AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - In a story that NewsChannel 10 broke Thursday, Amarillo ISD and UIL confirmed Friday morning that the Amarillo High varsity football team has been playing with an ineligible player most of the season.
AISD released the following statement:
The UIL has denied our waiver, which means that the Amarillo High varsity football team has been playing with an ineligible player most of the season. Unfortunately, the final steps in filing the appropriate UIL administrative documentation were not completed on behalf of the student-athlete before the start of the season. While this comes down to an unintentional, but ultimately consequential clerical oversight, we genuinely regret its impact on our student-athletes. We take UIL rules and regulations seriously. Going forward, we will work diligently to fortify our records procedures to ensure a mistake like this doesn’t happen again.

AHS will forfeit the following six games in which the ineligible athlete participated:
Aug. 29 - vs. Odessa High
Sept. 5 - San Angelo Central

Sept. 12 - Midland High
Sept. 25 - Monterey
Oct. 23 - Coronado
Oct. 31 - Lubbock High
The player did not participate in the matchup against Caprock, so that district win will stand.

This means if Amarillo High wins their matchup tonight, they will have 2 district wins under their belt and will still be eligible for playoffs depending on the results of the other games in the district.
If Amarillo High Loses Tonight
- If Amarillo High loses tonight, the Sandies would finish the regular season 1-5 in district play and miss the playoffs. In that scenario, the winner of the Lubbock High-Lubbock Coronado game would advance to 2-4 and tie with Caprock. However, Caprock holds the tiebreaker against both Lubbock schools and would claim the fourth playoff spot.
If Amarillo High Wins Tonight
- If Amarillo High wins tonight AND Lubbock Coronado beats Lubbock High, Coronado gets into the playoffs based off the second tiebreaker in the point differential.
- If Amarillo High wins tonight AND Lubbock High beats Lubbock Coronado, it forces a coin flip between Amarillo High, Lubbock High and Caprock for the fourth and final playoff spot since all three schools would be tied in the point differential
We will be following these matchups and will breakdown the results for you tonight on the Wrap Up.
